Bangladesh rode on Shakib al Hasan’s all-round heroics to register a convincing 84-run win over Papua New Guinea and become the first team to reach the Super 12s in the T20 World Cup.

Bangladesh managed to post a competitive 181/7 on the back of Mahmudullah’s 28-ball 50 and big-hitting from Shakib Al Hasan who made 46 and Mohammad Saifuddin who hammered a six-ball 19. And then the Bangladesh bowlers ran through Papua New Guinea’s top-order to restrict them to 97 all out in 19.3 overs.

Shakib Al Hasan played an important inning but it was Mahmudullah’s knock towards the end that helped Bangladesh post an above-par score and really took the game beyond PNG. Bangladesh lost opener Mohammad Naim (0), courtesy of a stunning catch by Sese Bau at deep-square leg.

Liton Das (29) and Shakib rallied the innings with their 50-run second-wicket stand. Bangladesh then lost the momentum but thanks to Mahmudullah, who brought them back into contention.

Brief Scores: Bangladesh 181/7 in 20 overs (Mahmudullah 50, Shakib 46; Kabua Morea 2-26, Assad Vala 2-26) beat PNG 97 all out in 19.3 overs (Kiplin Doriga 46*; Shakib 4-9) by 84 runs
