Assam government approves appointment of Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain as Deputy Superintendent of Police

Major decisions were taken on Thursday’s session of the Assam Cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma including that Olympian Lovlina Borgohain will be appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police on probation.

The Assam government on Thursday decided to approve the appointment of Olympic medal-winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Assam police.

The decision was taken in the Assam cabinet meeting held in Guwahati under chairmanship of Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state cabinet decided that Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borohain to be appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police on probation.

Announcing the cabinet decision, Assam Education minister Dr Ranoj Pegu said that, after Lovlina Borgohain created a history in Tokyo Olympic, the Assam government had announced that, like as Hima Das, Lovlina to be appointed as DSP of Assam police and today the Assam cabinet has approved it.

The 23-year-old Borgohain, who hails from the tiny Baro Mukhia village of Assam’s Golaghat district became only the third Indian boxer to finish on the Olympic podium, joining two of the biggest icons in Indian boxing — six-time world champion MC Mary Kom and the very decorated Vijender Singh.

Along with Olympic gold medal-winning javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, Indian women cricketer Mithali Raj, Lovlina Borgohain’s name has also been recommended for the Khel Ratna Award 2021 which is also known as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award the highest sporting honour of India.

The Assam Education minister further said that, the state cabinet also decided to give incentives to the health frontline workers for their outstanding contribution to fight against COVID-19.

“The Assam cabinet has decided to give Rs 2000 each to 10854 ANM, 9420 verifier, 200 Support staff, Rs 1000 each to 32715 ASHA workers and Rs 500 each to Anganwadi helpers. We have been vaccinated more than 2 crore people of the state so far,” Dr Ranoj Pegu said.
